Spring not only is a time to change up your wardrobe but it is also a great time to update your skincare routine. Just as you purge your closet of items you don’t wear, it’s beneficial to do the same to your skincare products. As we get away from the Winter months customizing your routine to the new weather and conditions keeps your skin healthy. This prevents issues that can come up when the seasons change and keeps your skin youthful and glowing! And who doesn’t want their skin at its best? In today’s post, I am sharing my tips to Spring clean your skincare routine.
Spring Clean Your Skin Care Routine
Like I have said before, I am not a skincare expert. I love to do research and found out what works best for me. So I am sharing some of the tips I’ve learned thru my own trial and error. You don’t have to do a complete makeover of your skincare routine but as we say bye to the winter months, a few tweaks will benefit all skin types.
Get Rid of Old Products
It is time to Marie Kondo your Beauty products. Check the expiration dates of all your products and throw away anything old. Expired products don’t work as well and in the case of skincare can sometimes cause more problems. Expiration dates are on skincare products for a reason! Make a note of any skincare products you need to replace.
Next, get rid of anything you don’t use! There is no point in having it take up space if you never use it. I always have a few products that are duds and I used to feel guilty about getting rid of them but now I know that I am making space for better ones.
Find a Sunscreen
Yes, everyone should be wearing sunscreen everyday, even in the Winter! But as Spring comes and we are all outside more, it is especially important to start wearing sunscreen. Make it part of your morning skincare routine! If you take care of your skin with great skincare products, facials or botox etc. but don’t wear sunscreen, sun damage will negate any of the improvements you are making. Here is my post with my favorite sunscreens.
Finding one that you love and works for your skin type is a big step in creating the habit of wearing sunscreen everyday. My absolute favorite face sunscreen is Supergoop Glowscreen (full review here). I have used it everyday for over two years. Supergoop just came out with a new sunscreen that is supposed to be super light! In this post I have put together a list of some of my favorite sunscreens. I have not tried the La Roche Posay one but have heard a lot of great things about it.
Double Cleanse
Double cleansing is even more important in the Spring than it is in the Winter months. Extra layers of sunscreen, sweat, and humid air collect on your skin. The first cleanser in a double cleanse is oil-based and works to take off your make up. I like a balm cleanser because it melts off make up easily and doesn’t strip your skin. This Elemis balm is my absolute favorite (read my review)!
Now that your make up is off, the second step is focused on deep cleaning your skin. This cleanser is based on your skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, use something with salicylic acid, or other deep cleaning products. For other skin types, use a good foaming cleanser that doesn’t strip the moisture from your skin. I love this one because my face feels clean but it doesn’t strip my skin!
Incorporate an Exfoliating Mask or Treatment Into Your Weekly Routine
As I mentioned before, your skin can get more congested this time of year. We are outside more, sweating more etc. If you have any type of allergies you know this time of year can be brutal with all the new things that have started growing, this also affects your skin. It’s time to up your exfoliating! A great exfoliator will eliminate the dead skin cells on your skin and help clean out your pores. All skin types can benefit from exfoliating you just have to see what works for you.
If you don’t already, add a once-a-week exfoliating mask or treatment to your routine. Look for chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs. Glycolic acid is a strong exfoliant but be careful if you have sensitive skin. But it also has the benefit to be good for lines and wrinkles in the skin. You’ll find it in a lot of anti-aging skincare products. If your skin type is more sensitive go for something a bit more gentle, like Lactic Acid. I use the Ordinary Peeling Solution around once a week as my skin needs it. It is my absolute favorite and I wrote a full review on it here.
Update Your Moisturizer
Spring is obviously a big weather change from Winter. Depending on your weather, your moisturizer may need to change. Think about the climate you live in, is it now humid, super hot, dry etc.? Those in more humid climates may need a lighter moisturizer. Thick moisturizers can feel too heavy on your skin with high humidity. They can leave your face feeling tacky or sticky.
If you are outside more or your climate isn’t very humid, you may need a more soothing moisturizer. Look for something that is calming or has fewer active ingredients. Nivea Creme moisturizer moisturizers and works for sensitive skin (see more info here). It is an incredible production, especially for the price. Overnight masks like this one are also really great. For skin that still needs more moisture, find a product with Hyaluronic acid. I like this cream because it can go on before your moisturizer.
