Winter weather makes me want to be comfortable and cozy. As much as I love to dress up, as soon as I’m home I immediately change into something more comfortable. My go to has been a matching sweat set. They are a complete outfit in one and you can’t beat the comfort. They aren’t the same baggy grey sweatpants that were popular in the 90s. The fabric isn’t just thick sweatsuit material either. Since I’m pretty certain I’m not alone in loving a comfortable outfit, I’ve pulled together my favorite matching sweat sets and tips on how to style them.
Styling Matching Sweat Sets
Leggings are great but when I am not working out and want comfort I love sweatpants more. I prefer an outfit that isn’t tight or restricting. At the end of the day there is nothing better than pulling on sweatpants and pulling my hair up!
Different Styles of Matching Sweat Sets
When picking out the right sweat set you have a few choices to make. One is the cut and style. Just like other pants, you can find a matching set in straight leg, skinny leg, wide leg and even jogger pants. You can easily find one in your favorite style. I have several matching sweatsuits and most of them have jogger pants. I like how they look with tennis shoes. To change things up, I have bought one with wide leg pants! Got to love options!
You also have options when it comes to the top. Just like any other top they come in lots of options. There is the basic sweatshirt vibe but also cropped or oversized shirts. The different combos of sweatshirts and sweatpants can create a ton of different looks.
Another thing to consider is all the great fabric options. The different fabrics can dress up the sweat set a little. Like so many other trends from the 90’s and early 2000’s, the velour sweat suit is back! Thankfully we left having words on the butt in the past. This blush one is a step up from the one I had in High School. The chic color and higher waist pants give it the needed update.
This color block set has to be my favorite! I received it as a birthday present and have worn it more than I care to admit. It has a slim enough fit to not look sloppy while still being comfortable. I’m truly considering buying it in the other color option.

How to Style Matching Sweat Sets
You may just want to wear a loungewear set at home with slippers but they can be styled for you to leave the house! With just a few tweaks you can go from binge watching Netflix to running errands. At some point every weekend, I am wearing one to run errands or just get out of the house. Since sweat sets now are cut more flattering, they don’t look sloppy. My outfit formula for sweat sets is trendy tennis shoes, a jacket and a crossbody or belt bag.
A jacket, denim or otherwise, adds a third layer to your outfit. It creates some interest and breaks up the solid colors of the sweat set. Denim jackets are one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. It obviously also helps by adding another layer for warmth. A darker colored set can even pair with a leather jacket. When it is really cold out you can add a final layer of a knee length coat or switch the jacket for a bomber or thicker coat.
Trendy, casual tennis shoes have been super popular the last few years. I’ve done several posts and outfit ideas that include them. You can find them at all price points. For those that love a more classic look you can’t go wrong with all white or all black. They’ll go with about anything and let your clothes be the star. Glitter, color and shine can make a statement if that’s the route you want. If your set has jogger pants then your shoes can be front and center of your outfit, if you want!
As a self-proclaimed bag lover, it will come as no surprise that I’ve come up with the best purse for this outfit formula. l always suggest finishing off any look with the right purse. For this casual look, I love a crossbody or belt bag! My favorite belt bag is this leather one that comes in a ton of colors (see full review here). I love how it can be worn with more than just casual looks. On the casual end this lululemon crossbody is super versatile. One of my roommates owns it in several colors.
