Spring is on the horizon, I can almost feel it! And before it officially gets here it is that awkward time between seasons. We are all excited to bring out our Spring clothes but it is still a little early to be in full Spring mode. Also, the weather doesn’t seem to always cooperate and the temperature can be very unpredictable, some days it’s warm weather, and others it’s cold weather. So for this post, I’ve put my tips and outfit ideas on how to transition your wardrobe from Winter to Spring.
What’s funny is I’m writing this post as Oklahoma gets another week of cold weather! The drop in temperatures has me even more excited for Spring. But right now I can only dream about any of my Spring clothes. Fingers crossed next week has warmer weather and I can start to transition from Winter.
How To Transition Your Wardrobe From Winter To Spring
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe to transition from Winter to Spring. It is all about styling your wardrobe with pieces from both seasons.
Stick to Light Layers
To stay comfortable thru the constant changes in temperature think about lightweight layers! It’s a simple but crucial step to staying comfortable. Think about items that can layer over or under your favorite Spring clothes. This post has some of my favorite layering pieces. Long sleeve t-shirts are one of the best layering pieces. Put them under Spring dresses or short sleeve tops!
Light jackets are also a great layer! They’ll work with so many items but can be easily taken off when the temperatures go up. A denim jacket may be the most versatile piece in a spring wardrobe.
Swap in light wash or white denim
Light or white jeans are one of the best pieces for transition weather. They provide the warmth or coverage needed when it is chilly while looking more Spring worthy. Spring mornings and evenings can be too chilly for bare legs.
This is one of the first things I recommend bringing out to transition your wardrobe. When there is even the tiniest sight of Spring weather, I start styling my white jeans with Winter sweaters. I’m still warm but look ready for the Spring months. Light or white denim also works with winter blouses.
Bring in a lighter color palette
Moving beyond denim, adding even touches of lighter spring colors will help transition your outfits to Spring. A light color palette, no matter the fabrics or type of clothing, lends itself to Springtime. If you have lighter-colored sweaters and winter tops, focus on them first. Even light-colored pants and sweater in a heavy fabric suddenly looks Spring ready when they are paired together.
Pull out a few Spring pieces in light colors to incorporate too! Layer light-colored short sleeve tops under your jackets or with other winter clothing.
Mix and Match Seasonal Pieces
Don’t be afraid to actually style some Winter and Spring pieces together. It is one of the best ways to get the most use out of both of your wardrobes. Sweaters and cardigans work like a jacket over short sleeve tops. You don’t have to put away your leather leggings yet! They can look great with spring tops too!
Boots work so well with Spring dresses! Whether they are booties or even knee-high boots, pair them with all of your floral dresses. Leather jackets also work with Spring dresses. I love the mix of hard and soft pieces. Another way to transition a dress is to layer a sweater over it. It then looks like a skirt and sweater combo. This works especially well with slip dresses. Denim shorts look so cute with sweaters, sweatshirts or long sleeve tops.
Winter to Spring Outfit Ideas
Boyfriend Blazer and Denim Shorts
Blazers are the answer to so many outfit dilemmas. They can be worn in place of a jacket and top off almost any outfit. My favorite cut is a boyfriend blazer because they can be worn for almost any occasion. Since they are a bit oversized they aren’t too dressy to wear on the weekend or for more casual moments.
My go-to outfit combination is: boyfriend blazer, graphic shirt and denim. The Graphic t-shirt and denim dress down the blazer. Add slides and a crossbody purse for the perfect Spring weekend look. This outfit formula can be switched around so many ways!
Booties and Floral Dress
If there was only ones shoe to weer when transitioning your closet from Winter to Spring, it would be the bootie. They take all Spring items and give them just a touch of Winter vibes. And depending on the heel and height booties can work for day, night, dressy or casual.
Booties with anything floral is my favorite. And Spring is always about the floral dresses! Whether it is mini or maxi, a floral dress looks chic with the leather or suded of the boots.
One of my favorite outfit combinations is soft and hard items. I feel it provides so much interest to an outfit. In this outfit, the soft floral dress mixes well with the leather in the booties and purse.
White Denim and Sweater
White denim is really the unspoken hero of Spring and Summer. And like I said above, they are a great item to pull out as soon as the first hint of Spring comes. Pair them with all of your winter blouses.
This sweater is truly one of my absolute favorite sweaters, I’ve ever owned. In fact, after having the blue one for a year, I had to have the pink one too. It is so soft and has the most flattering shape. What is really nice is that it is think enough that I can wear it into Spring as well.
Sweater over a Slipdress
While they have never gone out of style, slip dresses are really having a moment. Maybe it’s since so many pieces from the 90s are coming back. Or maybe because they are gorgeous, flattering and very versatile. Not to mention they work on any body type!
To dress down and warm up the slip dress, try layering something on top of the dress! For this outfit, a beautiful crew neck sweater gives the allusion of a skirt and top. Because slip dresses are fitted, you can get away with an oversized sweater if you want. This combination would also work with a big cardigan worn open. And even flats!
