Business casual is a pretty standard dress code for a lot of jobs. It is typically characterized by dress pants, slacks, skirts, blouses and pants and no denim or shorts. Each business will have their own specific guide but the basics are the same. In today’s post I have put together 5 pieces to add to a business casual capsule wardrobe. Whether you already have business casual attire or are just starting one, these pieces will be the heavy hitters in your wardrobe.
5 Pieces for a Business Casual Capsule Wardrobe
Wide Leg Trouser
A wide leg trouser is flattering, comfortable and a staple for a business casual capsule wardrobe. I prefer high waisted trousers because how they fit and look when a top is tucked in. A wide leg trouser can go with a wide variety of tops. Button downs and blouses are the easiest things to pair with them for a quick outfit. A blazer can be added for a dressier look. But for business casual, the blazer and trousers don’t need to match. In fact, you can create more interesting outfits when they don’t match. but coordinate.
I recommend at least two pairs in a wardrobe. One pair should be long enough to wear with heels and one pair that can be worn with flats. Neutral colors are obviously the most versatile ones to have. Depending on how conservative your job is, you can have fun with pattern and color.
Blazer
One very obvious but very crucial item for a business casual capsule wardrobe is a great blazer. This is one of the most versatile pieces in your capsule wardrobe. A great blazer will instantly elevate an outfit and add polish. The cut and style of blazers will depend on your dress code and personal style. A structured fitted blazer has the most classic and dressy look. A longer oversized blazer is a great style if you want something a bit more casual.
No matter which style you pick, a blazer will have versatility in your closet. For your first one I recommend a black or cream/khaki color. They’ll go with the most items. A classic look with a blazer is a wide leg trouser, button down and blazer. This combo will never let you down. If jeans are allowed, a blazer can dress them up and add sophistication to the outfit. A great blazer can even make a white t-shirt office appropriate when styled well.
Shirt Dress
Dresses are great for many reasons. My favorite is that in one piece you can have a whole outfit. For a business casual capsule wardrobe, a great shirtdress is a key component. Not only are they a great option when you need an outfit put together quickly but they have a lot versatility. Shirt dresses pair well with flats, heels and boots. They also are great for all seasons.
Find a shirtdress that is fitted but not tight. The fit is really important so the dress looks sophisticated and not too casual. Let your style shine thru with the fabric and print of a shirt dress.
White Button Down
There is no way to put together a business casual capsule wardrobe without a white button down. It is both a layering piece and something that can stand on its own. I like one that is a bit longer so that it can peak under tops when it is worn layered. The fit is totally up to you and your style.
You don’t need much of an explanation on how to style. Wear it with slacks or a skirt. Layer it underneath sweaters, vests and dresses!
Pointy Toe Pumps
Shoe trends change all the time but a great pump will always work for a business casual outfit. And a pointy toe pump is the best for a capsule wardrobe. A couple pairs will have you ready for any outfit you need to put together. Pick a height that you are comfortable with and can walk in well.
