Does anyone else feel like their wardrobe needs some updating? As each season comes I like to add a few new pieces but right now I feel like I need items to make my looks more current. I’m not sure what it was about the last few years, but I’ve had a hard time embracing a few new trends. Now I’m ready for a few big updates and in this post I am sharing four Fall wardrobe updates to add your closet.
Four Fall Wardrobe Updates
In the last few years, one of the biggest changes in fashion is the silhouette we are used to. The last decade has had a lot of trends that concentrated on a fitted silhouette. The tops we wore were many times longer in length. Now, the wardrobe update is about silhouettes that have at least one piece that is either a bit wider or even oversized. It gives outfits more of an interest! Also, focus on long pants and a cropped length top (see how to wear crop tops here). It doesn’t mean you have to show skin, just that the top should cut at your waist or where it meets your pants. Bonus is that this silhouette will make your legs look extra long!
Oversized Denim Jacket
For many of these updates, it is not that the item itself is out of style but there is an update to it that makes it more current. First up: the denim jacket. I honestly think a denim jacket will always be in style. Now, instead of a fitted denim jacket more relaxed ones are in style. An oversized one will layer well over the Fall wardrobe you already have. Most oversized jackets don’t just fit bigger but are also longer for a serious oversized look. But some are a cropped length. Either way the length is exaggerated: short or long.
Styling an oversized denim jacket is as easy as the denim jacket you already have: layer it over dresses, with pants etc. A short or fitted top under the jacket creates a bit of contrast or balance to an outfit. Don’t be afraid to style what can be a more casual piece over something dressy. The ultimate cool girl look this fall is an oversized denim jacket over a slip dress with a lug boot or shoe with a platform.
An oversized jacket layers easily over sweaters, sweatshirts and any other thicker items! A great way to layer up when the weather cools down a bit.
Straight Leg Denim
Straight leg denim has been a trend for a few seasons and it is now time to truly embrace it. While you don’t need to get rid of your skinny jeans, straight leg jeans definitely bring update any outfit. If you are like me and have only worn skinny jeans the last few years, then straight leg jeans can take a bit of time to get used to. Straight leg denim should fit well at the waist and around the hips and then go straight down and not taper or get skinnier at the ankle.
To start styling straight leg denim literally just switch them out for any time you wear skinny jeans; instant refresh. Don’t be afraid to style them with a top that is oversized or boxy. The key is to have something that gives you some shape like a belt or tucking in the shirt. Another Fall styling idea is to style straight leg denim with a fitted top and a super long or oversized third piece.
Cropped Sweater
Nothing says Fall more than a sweater and with each new year different styles come to the forefront. This year it is all about the cropped sweater! They are a great piece to wear with all your favorite Fall and Winter bottoms. The proportion of a cropped sweater with a pant or skirt will make your legs look longer!
Just because it is cropped doesn’t mean you have to show any of your stomach. Paired with a high-waisted bottom you can easily stay covered while wearing this trend.
I love how these sweaters look over a dress. They create a whole new look by making a dress look like a skirt.
Loafer
This is one of my absolute favorite trends for this season. The last couple years we have started seeing loafers and now this year they are everywhere! This shoe can go from casual to dressy and everything in between. It’s the perfect juxtaposition to another big trend, the ballet flat.
You can adapt a loafer to your style. Stick with the classic shape if that is your look. Or you can go crazy with color, heel size and embellishments to make them fit your style.
