Crop tops, as a trend, seem to come and go. In the 90’s it was a HUGE trend and you saw them absolutely everywhere. Since then they have never really gone away but, like all other 90’s trends, they are having a really big moment right now. Many think that a crop top is only for certain body types or certain ages. I am here to tell you that anyone can wear a crop top! You can style it sexy, casual and tasteful. In today’s post I am sharing my tips on how to wear a crop top at any age and some outfit ideas.
How to Wear A Crop Top at Any Age
I want to start off by saying something I just learned for myself. You do not need to be a certain size to wear a crop top. I repeat, you do not have to be “small” or “skinny” to wear a crop top. This trend is for absolutely any body! Don’t feel that you ever have to cover yourself up or can’t wear something fitted because you aren’t a certain size.
Find the Best Crop Top Fit
First a foremost you have to be comfortable in your crop top. They are so popular right now that almost every brand has come out with a few. If you don’t know where to start when choosing a crop top is to think about some of your favorite tops you already own. For example, do you love a square neckline? Are thick straps your favorite? Do you love button downs? Find a crop top that has a cut or feature you are already confident in.
A crop top that is universally flattering is one that fits well at the bust but is fitted but not tight under it. Something fitted under the bust shows your waist off.
Offset with Something High Waisted
The number one style tip for wearing a crop top and making it modern is to pair a crop top with a high waisted bottom. First, a high waist provides more coverage. This can make you more comfortable if you are nervous about this trend. Showing a strip of skin on your upper stomach is more updated way to show skin. Gone is the early 00’s trend of showing the lower part of your stomach, just above your low rise jeans. Pairing high waist and a crop also creates interest in an outfit, whether is a high waisted pant or even a maxi skirt.
Play with Proportions
Playing with proportions is a styling tip that works to make an outfit more interesting. Proportions are the size and shape of the clothing items in relation to each other. Any time an outfit feels a little flat or you’re not sure what to pair with an item, think about the proportions. Opposites create interest: oversized with fitted, wide leg with slim fit, crop top with high waist, there are tons of combinations. While you can definitely style tight with tight, that creates a look that is “young”.
The most complimentary outfits use the rule of thirds. Where your shirt and top meet creates a break. If the break is at the middle of your body, your body is split in half. When that is higher up your body is broken at 1/3rd at the top and 2/3rds at the bottom. The 1/3rd split is way more complementary to your body. A crop top creates this proportion very easily!
Style with a Top Layer
Another tip to add coverage to a crop top is add a 3rd piece over it. An open button down, jacket or blazer all layer well over a crop top. The top layer can also add some sophistication to the outfit. A blazer styled with a crop top is a fun date night look. Or for the day, a chambray button down or denim jacket can complete the look of a crop top and joggers. Crop tops also aren’t just for Summer outfits, an extra layer adds the warmth needed for the Fall and even Winter.
Choose Oversized Pieces
Like I mentioned when talking about proportions, an oversized piece can look sophisticated when styled correctly. It needs to be balanced with something fitted. An oversized crop top is also really comfortable. If you don’t like things fitted on top or are just getting used to wearing a crop top, oversized maybe the perfect style for you.
Keep it Matching
Matching sets are a huge trend! You see them everywhere and in about every style imaginable. Whet it comes to choosing a crop top or styling it a matching set makes the outfit easy. All that is needed is a great pair of shoes and a couple accessories. What is also great bout a matching set is that they create a long line and the focus is not on the crop top but the whole outfit.
Another bonus to a matching set is that each piece can be mixed and matched.
Go Monochromatic
A style tip that almost always works and definitely adds sophistication is to keep your outfit monochromatic. A monochromatic look gives your body a long line. You’ll look taller and leaner because there isn’t a color change that will break up your body. If you are worried about a crop top look, being “too young” when choosing a crop top pick one in a neutral shade. Then add high waisted bottoms in the same color family and you have an instantly chic outfit.
