Hair accessories are one of my favorite ways to elevate an outfit. Just like the right jewelry and bag can add to a look, so can hair accessories. Whether it is something subtle or a statement a hair accessory can be styled in so many ways. They can be used to cover up a bad hair day or accentuate your style. There are so many different types of hair accessories that can fit your style. In today’s post, I am sharing tips on how to style hair accessories and some of my favorite ones.
How to Style Hair Accessories
Use a Headband to Make a Statement
Statement headbands are everywhere right now. Whether they are knotted, oversized or embellished they can add a pop of color to an outfit. They are also one of the easiest to use and can cover not so freshly washed hair. There are two ways to style a statement headband. One is to style your hair with a lot of volume to balance out the big headband. Another way is to wear your hair sleeker or even pull it back in a bun to let the headband be the only focus.
For moments when my hair is too greasy or isn’t doing what I want, I typically reach for a headband. They can cover a number of issues and turn around a bad hair day. I personally prefer thicker headbands like this one and this one because they hold my hair back better. They are also particularly helpful if you are wanting to apply less heat to your hair. If I still want to wear my hair down, but haven’t really styled it, a headband works!
Hair Clips are A Quick Way to Add a Hair Accessory
A quick and easy way that I love is to use a cute hair clip or two on one side of your hair to pull a few of the front pieces back. The clips can pull back your bangs or a top layer. These clips are strong enough to pull back even thicker hair. This look quickly adds some interest when styling your hair.
Use Claw Clips to Pull Your Hair Up
The 90s are definitely back in full swing and claw clips are one of the biggest trends. One of the great things about a claw clip is that they are so easy to use. Whether you pull your hair half up or all the way up, a claw clip can quickly get your hair off your face. It is one of the best hair accessories to cover up hair that isn’t freshly washed. I love these flower claw clips!
Scrunchies Dress Up a Ponytail
A quick, easy and fun hair accessory is a scrunchie. In two seconds you can add it to a ponytail and it is so much more fun than a typical hair tie! What I love about them is that there are now so many different styles of them. There are casual ones that work well with athleisure and denim. Then there are some that are made of nicer fabrics and actually work with more dressed up outfits.
Accentuate A Side Part With Double Clips
I know middle parts are a big trend but a side part can still look really good. To accentuate it, put two clips on the side with the part. This will exaggerate the part and is a really chic look. Depending on your look, you can use neutral clips or something bright to add a pop of color. If you have any baby or loose hairs, clips can catch and smooth them. I love the these gold and pearl hair clips.
Group Bobby Pins for More Impact
For any look that you are using bobby pins, layer several together for more impact. For example, if you are using bobby pins to pull your hair half up, use more than you need but group them together for an edgier look. You can even use colored bobby pins or bejeweled ones if you wan to add a pop of color.
Use a Scarf
Scarves can add a pop of color to your hair. Used as a headband a scarf can also cover up greasy roots. Sometimes scarves can be slick and will slide out of your hair, use a bobby pin or two to secure it. Another way to style your hair with it is to wrap around your ponytail. Once you have pulled your hair back wrap it around your hair tie. You can leave the ends free or tie the in a bow. A scarf is always something I pack on a vacation for easy styles. They are great for when you want to tie back loose hair and keep them out of your face.
Don’t Be Afraid to Have a Bow in Your Hair
While it may seem like a very juvenile look, a bow can be a very sophisticated hair accessory. Keep the bow simple and neutral for the most refined look. Then juxtapose it with relaxed undone hair.
My favorite way to style a bow is to pull hair half up and either tie a bow around the ponytail or use a barrette with a built in bow, like this one. If you have longer hair, I suggest putting the half up pony at the base of your head. This relaxes the look and balances the femininity of the bow.
